Resources

Local organizations, resources, and collections that we work with include:

The Rauner Rare Book Library

The Rauner Rare Book Library at Dartmouth. The artifacts and documents belonging to the Historical Society are held and cared for by the Rauner Rare Book Library at Dartmouth. They include many items dealing with both Hanover and Dartmouth history.  During non-pandemic times, the library is open to the public, and the staff is both knowledgeable and helpful. The library is located on the Dartmouth campus at 36 College Street in Hanover. Its contact information for the public is available via the web site for Dartmouth Libraries: Rauner Library.

The Bust of Daniel Webster: This was part of a special exhibit at the Rauner Library as part of the 200th Anniversary of the Dartmouth College case. This was the case, argued by Daniel Webster in front of the Supreme Court, that preserved Dartmouth’s status as a private college.

The Howe Library

The Howe Library is the location where we often mount exhibits during the winter when the Webster Cottage Museum is closed. The library has two exhibit cases in which can display artifacts from the cottage. The library has a strong collection of books relating to Hanover’s history.

Sylvia Allen Nelson Exhibit

In 2020, before the pandemic closed the library, we put on display an exhibit on the life of Sylvia Allen Nelson, 1931-2019. She grew up in the town of Hanover, was married here, and after a time with her family in New Jersey, returned in 1988 to reside in the town. She was the heart and soul of the Hanover Historical Society for decades.
