Volunteer Opportunities

Board of Hanover Historical Society:

President: The President shall have executive supervision of the activities of the Society within the scope provided by the Bylaws, shall preside at all meetings of the Society and the Board of Directors, and shall report on the year’s activities of the Society at the Annual Meeting.

Vice President:  The Vice President shall assume all presidential duties of the Society in the event of the incapacity, absence, or resignation of the President.  The Vice President shall recruit, manage, train, and schedule the Docents of Webster Cottage.

Secretary:  The Secretary shall keep the Minutes of the meetings of the Society and of the Board of Directors and shall manage the communications for the Society.

Treasurer:  The Treasurer shall be responsible for the safekeeping of the Society’s funds and for maintaining adequate financial records.  The Treasurer shall deposit all monies received on behalf of the Society with a reliable banking company in the name of the Hanover Historical Society, shall collect dues, and shall render an annual financial report.  All monies shall be paid out by numbered checks.  Payments in excess of $1000 shall be authorized in writing by the President.

Executive Committee: The Elected Officers of the Society shall constitute its Executive Committee.  This Committee shall carry on the business of the Society between Board meetings and report its actions at the next Board meeting following such actions.

Committees and Volunteer Positions:

The Board may select and staff such committees as needed for the proper function and service of the Society.

Curator:  The Curator shall be appointed by the President with the advice of the Board of Directors, without term, and may be a member of the Board of Directors.  The Curator will receive and catalogue items belonging to or on loan to the Society, and shall attend to their proper and secure display, storage and maintenance.

Librarian:  The Librarian shall be appointed by the President with the advice of the Board of Directors, without term, and may be a member of the Board of Directors.  The Librarian shall receive and catalogue printed materials and digital files belonging to or on loan to the Society and shall attend to their proper and secure storage, maintenance and availability for study and research.

Researcher:  The Researcher shall be appointed by the President with the advice of the Board of Directors, without term, and may be a member of the Board of Directors.  The Researcher shall manage inquiries to the Society by individuals and groups.

Webster Steward:  The Webster Steward shall be appointed by the President with the advice of the Board, without term, and may be a member of the Board of Directors.  The Webster Steward shall work in cooperation with Dartmouth College to attend to the maintenance and security of Webster Cottage.

Docents: The Docents are members of the Society and act as guides in Webster Cottage.  They report to the Vice President of the Society. They receive training for this position and guide visitors on open days, Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. They are responsible for opening and closing Webster Cottage each day they are assigned there.
